About the Crew
The ByteDance AI Product Counseling team stands as the guardian of legal support for the company’s AI products and services. We’re expanding at a breakneck pace, and on the hunt for seasoned, brilliant, and capable product counseling experts to join our ranks. In this role, you’ll be an essential resource for ByteDance’s AI product and business squads, assessing new applications, features, functionalities, and initiatives. Your role? To provide guidance, globally, regarding legal rights implications and strategies for risk mitigation. You’ll work in close collaboration with and report to the Head of the AI Product Counseling team.
Your Daily Adventures Include:
- Being the first line of legal defense, managing and safeguarding the company’s AI-related intellectual property, data privacy, and cybersecurity legal risks; and connecting with the legal subject matter experts when needed.
- Teamwork galore! Collaborate with the AI product team, TnS, Legal, PR, and GR teams to establish and implement responsible AI practices. This includes tackling the safety, bias, fairness, and transparency risks associated with AI.
- Put your legal prowess to work. Draft, review, and negotiate AI-related contracts, including licensing and data usage agreements.
- Stay ahead of the curve. Identify, assess, and communicate the ever-evolving global AI regulatory requirements and trends. Then, drive these insights into action with the product teams.
- Educate the world! Design and deliver global training sessions to enlighten employees about the legal and ethical considerations when developing, deploying, and using AI technologies.
Your Credentials:
What You Bring to the Table:
- You’ve got a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- A member in good standing of the California or New York bar (we’d prefer this, but we’ll consider other bar memberships).
- A wealth of experience! You’ve spent over 10 years practicing law, a mix of in-house and private practice, advising on IP, privacy, AI, and ML issues in the realm of technology platform companies.
- You embody the highest ethical standards and carry a positive attitude. Learning is your game, and you’re always ready to pick up new knowledge and skills. Navigating through murky legal waters doesn’t faze you.
- Self-starting and confident, you’re a pro at communication, have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and possess a creative mind. You’re the person who can make sound judgments and partner effectively with the business in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility is your middle name. You’re willing to hop into meetings scheduled before or after your home time zone’s normal business hours.

- Direct experience mingling with regulatory authorities, industry associations, or standards bodies.

For the Inquisitive: The base salary range for this role in your chosen city is a tantalizing $202,350 to $300,000 annually.
